Four Popular BLM Recreation Sites Prepare for Winter Operations
COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho— As summer ends and colder weather approaches, the Bureau of Land Management staff will begin winterizing Mica Bay Boater Park, Killarney Lake Campground, Blackwell Island, and Huckleberry Campgrounds this month.
Water systems at Killarney Lake Campground and Mica Bay Boater’s Park will be shut off to prevent damage from freezing conditions no later than October 9, 2026. These sites remain open during winter months, with reduced services.
The water system at Huckleberry Campground will shut down for the season during the week of October 26, 2026. The last night for reservations with full amenities is Sunday, October 25, 2026. The campground will still be open for first-come, first-serve camping, however water will not be available.
Lastly, due to the seasonal drop in water levels at Lake Coeur d’Alene, Blackwell Island will close for the season the evening of October 12, 2026. The seasonal closure allows the BLM to winterize the site’s water systems before freezing temperatures arrive. Blackwell Island will reopen in May for normal spring and summer operations.
