BLM Temporarily Closes Big Creek Site for Restoration Work
COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho— The Bureau of Land Management will temporarily close BLM administered lands in the vicinity of the Central Shoshone County Water District intake facility. The BLM in cooperation with the Coeur d’Alene Tribe, Trout Unlimited, and the Restoration Partnership are removing the deteriorated concrete and steel dam, water intake structures, and associated facilities that have been out of service since 2011. These actions will improve fish passage within the Big Creek watershed, providing access to clean and cool habitats for spawning and rearing—habitats that have been obstructed due to the dam's height and water velocity.
The area will be closed to camping, parking, and other uses for the duration of the construction activities beginning Sept. 28 through Nov. 30, 2026. Big Creek Road will remain open for travel. This temporary closure is to protect persons and resources while allowing heavy equipment to complete the restoration safely and efficiently.
