PRINEVILLE, Ore.—The Bureau of Land Management extends an invitation to apply for special recreation permits to provide non-motorized, river-related commercial outfitter and guide services, including fishing, and other recreation services on the eight-mile Chimney Rock Segment of the Lower Crooked Wild and Scenic River and 100 miles of the Lower Deschutes Wild and Scenic River. The applications will be accepted from October 1 – 30, 2026, and successful applicants would be able to start using their permit in the 2027 season.

“We see visitors coming from around the world to explore these beautiful rivers for a variety of reasons,” said Lisa Clark, Deschutes Field Manager. “Commercial guides can offer experiences like rafting, fishing, and paddleboarding for a range of audiences from youth to visitors requiring a more accessible opportunity in a safe, professional and sustainable manner.”

These Wild and Scenic Rivers are managed to ensure recreation use while protecting and enhancing the other outstandingly remarkable values like fisheries, wildlife and hydrology that prompted these rivers to be designated as Wild and Scenic. The number of available permits reflects this balance. This year interested individuals and companies will be applying for up to four new available Special Recreation Permits (SRPs) on the Lower Deschutes River. Up to two new SRPs will be awarded for the Lower Crooked River.

Application materials are available on the BLM Prineville website or by calling the Prineville District Office at 541-416-6700. Completed applications must be delivered to the BLM Prineville District, Deschutes Field Office, no later than 4:30 PM on Friday, Oct. 30, 2026. Separate applications are required for each river.
